Zsófia Réka Bekker
Policy Officer European Commission
Zsófi is a Policy Officer at the European Commission currently working on Sustainable Fisheries Management, Sea Basin Strategies, and the Blue Economy at the European level in DG-MARE. Previously, she worked in DG-ENV on the implementation of the Water Framework and Floods Directives, working directly with countries to improve the ecological and chemical status of ground and surface water bodies. She holds a Master's in Environmental Policy from Sciences Po Paris where she focused on water governance and water project finance issues alongside multilateral policy frameworks. Zsófi also has experience in climate diplomacy and regional cooperation, having worked in the Western Balkans and co-organised the First Ministerial on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans during her time working for the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). Zsófi worked stints in Economic Analysis at the OECD, as well as in ESG Analysis in the private, and project and events management in the third sectors. Her work spans the Source-to-Sea approach with a strong belief in an ecosystem-based management model to both fresh and salt water. She is most interested in science-based policymaking and transboundary cooperation. She speaks fluent Hungarian, English, German, and intermediate French.
