Steven Setiawan
Thematic Focal Point of Climate Action Working Group Children and Youth Major Group (CYMG) to UNEP
Steven is a water and climate educator in Indonesia with seven years of experience in consolidating youth aspirations on water for people and the planet. Steven obtained his Bachelor's in Biology from Bandung Institute of Technology and a Double Master's in Circular Economy from Leiden University and the University of Graz. On the issue of Water for People, Steven developed a WASH curriculum for 100 primary school teachers in Cebu City, the Philippines and provided 5,000 WASH Emergency Kits in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Rai in Cebu City. Steven also facilitated the primary school activity "Water, Water, Water", an interactive dialogue with primary school students on water allocation for 20,000 primary school students in Indonesia. On the issue of Water for Planet, Steven co-founded eLarvae, a startup that prevents organic waste from entering the Citarum River, once held the status of the dirtiest river in the world, by recycling two tonnes of organic waste monthly with Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL). Steven has engaged formally with the issue of water diplomacy and governance since 2023 and has co-led 15,000 youth in providing written inputs on negotiations related to water in UNEP-related processes.
