Mathilde Domitille Coralie Courroye

Associate expert United Nations Environment Programme

Mathilde Domitille Coralie Courroye stumbled upon water while working for a local government in Japan, where she discovered how water is paramount not only to the environment, but also to people, culture and the economy. Since then, her work has taken her across different levels and areas of environmental policy, from freshwater, wetlands and biodiversity at France's Ministry for Ecological Transition to multilateral environmental governance at the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. Through this journey, she has come to see water not as an issue in isolation, but as a thread connecting different environmental challenges, from climate change and biodiversity to pollution. At UNEP, she was part of the Secretariat supporting negotiations for a global instrument to end plastic pollution from its early stages, working with Member States and observers with different perspectives and priorities. She now supports UNEP's Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR), as well as the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), where Member States shape global environmental priorities and negotiate and adopt resolutions and decisions. Mathilde hopes to continue learning from multilateral environmental processes and contributing to work that keeps water high on the global agenda, while recognising how closely it connects to so many aspects of everyday life.
