Bhabishya Khaniya

Bhabishya Khaniya is a civil and environmental engineer and joint PhD candidate at the University of Toronto, Canada, and the University of Melbourne, Australia, specializing in sustainable and climate-resilient water management. His research advances the implementation of nature-based solutions for urban water management and climate adaptation, with a focus on engineered approaches to urban flood mitigation, pollution reduction, and ecosystem service enhancement. Prior to his PhD, he completed a Master’s degree in Sustainability Management at the University of Waterloo, Canada, where he contributed to the development of a decision-support tool to identify vulnerabilities faced by marine communities and evaluate responses to global change. Bhabishya has authored numerous publications and regularly presents his research at international conferences. His research and academic excellence have earned him competitive awards and scholarships, including the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship from the Government of Canada. Working across Canada, Australia, Nepal, and Sri Lanka has shaped his understanding of how water challenges differ across contexts and strengthened his commitment to translating scientific knowledge into locally relevant and practical solutions. Beyond academia, Bhabishya has led youth-focused initiatives in Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Canada that promote sustainable water use, collective action, and community engagement.
