Abigail Asake Mariam Usuf

Abigail is a Gambian Environmental Engineer and Chevening Scholar completing an MSc in Environmental Engineering at Newcastle University, UK. She has over three years of experience in The Gambia’s water sector, including work with the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), where she progressed from Hydraulic Modeler to Projects and Planning Manager. Her experience spans water-supply planning, hydraulic modelling, GIS-based infrastructure mapping, District Metered Areas, and rural WASH delivery. Her work has shown her how gaps in reliable data, investment, and institutional capacity can shape whether water infrastructure translates into sustainable services. This experience underpins her MSc research, which used data analytics and network science to examine the resilience and efficiency of water distribution systems across international case studies. Beyond technical engineering, Abigail is passionate about youth engagement and equitable access to opportunities. She volunteers with Women in STEM Gambia, has supported water conservation outreach in schools and communities, and is helping develop opportunities for young water professionals in The Gambia. She hopes to bridge technical expertise, data, policy, and youth leadership to contribute to more equitable, resilient and sustainable water systems.
